Gunslingers
Every year since 1973, a group of British enthusiasts gather together in a corner of England in what they call a Roundup. They share their love of the American Pioneer West - dressing authentically and even living (for a few days) in the way the pioneers would have. This means sleeping in canvas tents they make themselves, cooking over open flames, entertaining themselves in ways common at the time: quick draw, roping, tomahawk throwing and archery with campfires and dancing in the evenings.
Many participants have a ‘Westerner’ name, like Drummer, Yuma, Kid, T-Gun, Roscoe... then there’s the Turkey Creek Gang. Some of the names and personas they adopt are based on historical characters. They have in depth knowledge of the history, customs and lifestyle of that period. They are keen to make as many aspects as possible historically accurate. It’s a very family orientated event with whole family groups attending together, enjoying their shared interest. Some older members have even attended since it began, passing it down through generations. I set up my portable studio and photographed them right there at the Roundup.
